ANNAPOLIS, Md.— The Navy football team will open up the 2029 football season on Sept. 1 at Ohio State, the two schools announced today. This will be the sixth meeting between the two and the first since 2014.
The last three meetings between Navy and Ohio State have been close as the Buckeyes defeated the Mids 31-28 in the 1981 Liberty Bowl, 31-27 in 2009 in Columbus and 34-17 in 2014 in Baltimore.
In the 2009 game, Navy scored two touchdowns in a span of four minutes to cut the Ohio State lead to two, but Buckeye safety Brian Rolle picked off Ricky Dobbs’ two-point conversion pass and returned it 99 yards for two points and clinched the Ohio State win.
Despite the interception, Dobbs was sensational as he ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 83 yards and two touchdowns. His 85-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Curry in the fourth quarter pulled the Mids to within eight and after an Emmett Merchant interception, Dobbs scored on a 24-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to two.
In the 2014 game, Navy trailed by just three (20-17) in the fourth quarter before Ezekial Elliott scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to put the Buckeyes up 10 and Michael Thomas scored on a late nine-yard touchdown pass from J.T. Barrett that put the game away.
Ryan Williams rushed for 118 yards on seven carries to lead the Mids.
Ohio State would go on to post a 14-1 record and defeat Oregon 42-20 in the Rose Bowl to win the College Football Playoff.
