American Athletic Conference media days held a little bit of a surprise for Navy fans. Images from conference photo sessions appeared to show the team captains wearing new football uniforms.

Today, the team confirmed that there would be new uniforms via Twitter:

The uniforms include several new design elements. The "NAVY" on the front of the home uniform is now written in gold letters instead of white. The six-stripe theme that was incorporated into all Navy Athletics uniforms after switching to Under Amour remains, with the stripes moving from behind the numbers to the shoulders. The six-stripe theme was also added to the pants, along with a large blue stripe on the home uniform. The helmet remains unchanged.

Navy football has a long tradition of changing their uniforms through the years. The shoulder hoops are reminiscent of Navy's uniforms during their "golden era" of the late 1950s through the 1960s. The Mids wore similar uniforms against Western Kentucky in 2009 when celebrating the 50th anniversary of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, a look that remains popular among Navy fans today.

The new uniforms will make their public debut at Navy media day on Saturday.
