Army West Point defeated Navy, 17-10, in the 119th Army-Navy game. With the win, Army clinched their second straight Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, and just their third in the last 23 years. The win is Army’s third straight against the Mids, and the first three-game win streak for Army since they won five in a row from 1992-96.

Navy (3-10) could only muster 208 yards of offense on the day, including just 127 yards rushing. Army (10-2) gained 283 yards, with 222 coming on the ground, well below their number two nationally ranked season average of 303 yards (2nd in the nation).

After Navy won the toss and deferred, Army took just five plays and 2:26 to go 82 yards for the opening touchdown. As has been the theme with the Mids all season, the key play was an Army conversion on 3rd and long when Kelvin Hopkins, Jr. found Glen Coates for 17 yards on third and 6. On the very next play, Kell Walker went 51 yards to get to the Navy 10, with Hopkins finishing out the drive from there.

After that quick drive, the teams settled into a typical Army-Navy slugfest with neither team able to generate much offense. Army was able to score again on a 33-yard John Abercrombie field goal with 4:33 left in the third quarter. Between those scoring drives were six punts, an interception, a missed field goal and a turnover on downs.

Action picked up in the fourth quarter after Navy changed quarterbacks from Zach Abey to Garrett Lewis. Lewis moved Navy 56 yards in 8 plays but fumbled at the Army 6 to kill a promising drive. After an Army 3-and-out, Malcolm Perry went 43 yards on the first play to set up Navy’s only touchdown on the day, a Lewis plunge from the one.

Navy forced yet another three and out, but on the subsequent drive, Abey fumbled as he was being sacked on fourth down, and Army took over at the Navy 22 with just 3:02 remaining. The Black Knights took 1:34 off the clock before scoring the clinching touchdown on a Hopkins, Jr. one-yard run.

The Mids were able to get in position for a 46 yard Bennett Moehring field goal with just 29 seconds left in the game but could not recover the ensuing onside kick and Army ran out the clock.

“I’m proud of how we fought back,” Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “We kept battling. Both defenses played really well.”

Navy’s season is complete while Army will face Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl on December 22nd.
