Navy offensive coordinator Grant Chesnut has been relieved of his duties.

"As the head coach my job is to constantly evaluate every part of our program, starting with myself and the rest of our staff," said head coach Brian Newberry in a statement released Friday afternoon. "Every decision I make is purely about what's best for our program and our players. These decisions can sometimes be very difficult, but are necessary. This is a results-oriented business and we did not effectively produce on the offensive side of the ball the way we expect or need to. I am grateful for Coach Chesnut's hard work and service to our program over the past year. We wish him and his wonderful family all the best moving forward."

Chesnut came to Annapolis from Kennesaw State, where he ran a version of the same spread option offense that Navy has used over the last 20 years. While he was optimistic that he would be able to adjust to the change in blocking rules that has affected option offenses, those adjustments weren't effective. Navy's offense struggled for most of the season, especially over the last five games. They finished 125th in the country in scoring offense, averaging 17.7 points per game. The Mids averaged fewer than 200 rushing yards for the first time since the 2020 COVID season and only the second time since 2001. Navy scored over 20 points only once since the win over North Texas on October 7.

In the statement, the Naval Academy said that there will be a national search for the new offensive coordinator.
