No. 24/23 Tulane defeated South Alabama 37-17 in a matchup of teams that combined for 22 wins last season — the most combined wins in any FBS matchup in Week 1.

Florida Atlantic head coach Tom Herman improved to 23-4 all-time as an American Athletic Conference coach. Herman went 22-4 in two seasons at Houston and is 1-0 at Florida Atlantic. Herman’s .852 winning percentage is the best of any American Athletic Conference coach.

SMU has won 19 of its last 23 home games after the Mustangs’ 38-14 win against Louisiana Tech.

East Carolina hit a field goal as time expired against No. 2 Michigan, extending the Pirates’ streak to 313 games without being shut out. The Pirates have scored in every game since a 56-0 setback to Syracuse Oct. 4, 1997.
