American Athletic Conference Announces Navy’s 2024 Football Schedule

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—The American Athletic Conference announced on Thursday the 2024 Navy football schedule. The Mids will play five games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and two neutral site games within driving distance in East Rutherford, N.J. and Landover, Md.

Kickoff times and television designations for the first three weeks of the season, as well as the season-long weeknight games, will be finalized by June 1. The rest of the schedule will fall under the customary 12-day and six-day selection processes.

Navy opens the 2024 campaign with three-straight home games as the Mids play host to Bucknell on Aug. 31, Temple on Sept. 7 and, after a bye week, Memphis on Sept. 21. It will be the first time since 1988 that Navy has opened with three consecutive games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

This will be the 15th time Navy and Bucknell have played each other on the gridiron, but the first since 1925 when Navy defeated the Bison 13-7 in Annapolis. Navy leads the all-time series 9-4-1.

The Mids will have revenge on their minds the next week as Temple comes to town. Temple defeated Navy last year in Philadelphia. This will be the 19th meeting between the two schools with the series tied at nine. Navy won the last time the game was played in Annapolis in 2022, 27-20 in overtime.

The Memphis game will mark the end of Navy’s three-game homestand. The Tigers will be one of the preseason favorites to win the American Athletic Conference as they return three-year starting quarterback Seth Henigan and are coming off a 10-3 season that included a 36-26 victory over Iowa State in the Liberty Bowl.

Navy will travel to Birmingham, Ala. the following week (Sept. 28) to take on the Blazers at Protective Stadium. This will be Navy’s first trip to Birmingham. The Mids won last year’s game 31-6.

Navy will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to play Air Force the following week (Oct. 5) in the first leg in the battle for the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy.

After another bye week, Charlotte will make its first trip to Annapolis on Oct. 19 for Navy’s Homecoming game. The Mids won in Charlotte last year in a defensive slugfest 14-0.

After the Charlotte game, Navy will play five of its final six games away from the friendly confines of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Navy is considered the home team for the Saturday, Oct. 26 tilt against Notre Dame at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. It will be the 97th meeting between the two schools and the 97th time in the last 98 years the two schools have met, with only COVID ending the longest continuous intersectional rivalry in the country in 2020.

The Irish are coming off a 10-3 campaign which included a 40-8 drubbing of Oregon State in the Sun Bowl. Most pundits have Notre Dame ranked among their preseason Top 10. Notre Dame will be led by Duke transfer quarterback Riley Leonard.

MetLife Stadium has been kind to the Mids over the years, as Navy beat Army there in 2021 (17-13) and Notre Dame in 2010 (35-17).

The Mids will play two true road games the following two weeks as they will travel to Houston to face Rice on Nov. 2 and to Tampa to play USF on Nov. 9.

Rice went 6-7 last year which includes a loss to Texas State in the First Responder Bowl. This will be the 13th time the two schools have met and the first since 2009 when Navy won at Rice 63-14. The two met most famously in the 1958 Cotton Bowl with the Mids coming away with a 20-7 win. The all-time series is tied at six. Rice will be led by Temple transfer quarterback E.J. Warner.

USF is also coming off a bowl game as it finished 7-6 last year which included a 45-0 destruction of Syracuse in the Boca Raton Bowl. USF finished the year winners of four of its final six games and returns its sensational sophomore quarterback, Byrum Brown. The all-time series is tied at two and this year marks Navy’s first trip to Tampa since 2016.

The Mids finally return to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Nov. 16 as they play host to Tulane on Senior Day. The Green Wave are coming off an 11-3 season that saw them lose to SMU in the AAC Championship Game 26-14. This will be the first time the two schools have met since 2020 when Navy pulled off the biggest comeback win in school history, 27-24, in New Orleans. The two schools have met 25 times overall with the all-time series standing at 12-12-1.

The AAC season finale at East Carolina will take place on Saturday, Nov. 30 OR on Friday, Nov. 29. A final decision on the date of that game will be made by Oct. 14. Navy won last year’s game in Annapolis 10-0.

Navy leads the all-time series against the Pirates 9-2 with the last four games being decided by a total of 21 points. The Mids are 5-0 all-time at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, including a 23-20 double overtime win in Greenville in 2022.

The American Athletic Conference Championship Game, matching up the top two teams in the conference, will take place on Friday, Dec. 6 at the home of the regular season champion.

The 125th playing of the Army-Navy Game presented by USAA, the greatest rivalry in all of sports, will return to Landover, Md. and the home of the Washington Commanders on Saturday, Dec. 14. This is the second time the game has been played in Landover with the first taking place in 2011, a game that Navy won 27-21. Navy leads the all-time series 62-55-7.
